Have you been hearing the buzz about Chalk Couture? I’ve been on the fence about whether I want to dip my toes into Chalk Couture. In the meantime I decided to try Show off transfers that I purchased at Hobby Lobby.

I was at Hobby Lobby over the weekend looking for chalk paint, and stumbled on SHOW OFFS. They are adhesive vinyl stencils that you use, the same way as Chalk Couture. They had some appealing stencils that ranged in price from $2.99 to $7.99. Like Chalk Couture the stencils are reusable, washable, and can be used with a variety of paints and inks.
Ok …I bought in. So I’ll show you how it works.
I had purchased this chunky frame from Goodwill. Thrift stores are a great place to find chunky wood frames at a minimal price.
I removed the glass, and turned over the picture that was in the frame. Photo backing was heavy, and in good shape. I decided to paint it. I used Folk Art Home Decor Chalk paint in Maui Sand. It’s a charcoal color. The paint went on to the paper in an interesting way. It actually made the paper look like wood grain. Bonus! I set it aside to dry.
Using Adhesive Vinyl Stencils
Next I took the glass from the frame and cleaned and dried it really well. I wanted the dark backing under the glass, but the white stencil design on top of the glass. As the directions instructed I removed the white backing paper off the stencil.
The stencil is a little tacky on the back side, but not glueing back to itself like I thought it would be. The next step was to place the stencil on the glass and then measured the area around it. I guess it would have been easier to lay the stencil down before removing the backing. Note to self: It would have been easier if I centered the stencil, and marked the glass before removing the backing.
I poured some Folk Art Home Decor Chalk paint in white andorack into my paint tray. Using a pouncing sponge, I pounced paint on the negative areas of the stencil. This only took a couple of minutes.
While the paint was still wet, I slowly pulled the stencil off.
WOW! I was amazed at how easy this was.
In less than 10 minutes (minus the drying time) the project was complete. 30 minutes later done and hung! I had a beautiful completed piece of wall art for my coffee station.
I may still go back and paint the frame. Seems like a whole lot of wood going on here. I was really so excited to try these I wanted to see how quickly I could complete a project.
In summary from watching others Show Offs work the same way as Chalk Couture stencils. The show offs price is lower, but the advantage of Chalk Couture is the amazing amount of designs they have available.
I’m still on the fence whether to buy into Chalk Couture but I will say these adhesive vinyl stencils are AAMMAAZZIINNGG!
I recently bought my starter kit for Chalk Couture. In comparison the Show off transfers and Chalk Couture transfers perform in the same way. The Show off transfers are not quite as sticky as the ones from Chalk Couture. My thought is the chalk couture transfer tackiness would allow it to perform more on more projects.
I did find that the chalk couture paste and ink, perform exactly the same with the Showoff transfers. So the the paste and ink are easily interchangeable to use with Show off transfers.
The reasons I like Chalk Couture more
- The variety of detailed transfers is incredible!
- The variety of Chalk Couture paste and inks are amazing, with more colors being released in a couple of days. The only removable chalk product I have found, that is similar when dried is the Martha Stewart chalk pen. With Martha Stewart’s product I have only been able to find it in white.
- Chalk couture puts everything in your hands at once. You don’t have to shop multiple stores to find the products to complete a project.
- When you become a designer you can purchase all Chalk Couture products for 40% off. The initial designer kit is $99.00 but is worth $230.00.
- My Chalk Couture designer group offers free on going training if you are interested in selling. As well we have videos (not available to the public) of how to use Chalk Couture and project ideas.
